Hose Reel Won't Rewind or Cranks Hard? How to Fix It

A reel that fights you is almost never broken. Nine times out of ten the hose is still full of water, twisted on the drum, or piled up on one side. Here's how to find the cause and fix it in a few minutes.

Start With the Easy Check

Shut off the spigot, then open the nozzle and leave it open. If the hose goes soft and the crank suddenly turns easier, you found it: water pressure was keeping the hose round and stiff.

A pressurized hose is fatter, heavier, and refuses to bend around the drum. Draining it fixes more hard-cranking complaints than anything else.

The 7 Most Common Causes

  1. 1
Water still in the hosePressure or trapped water makes the hose stiff and bulky. Fix: shut the spigot, open the nozzle, and let it drain as you wind.
  2. 2
Twists in the hoseA hose that was dragged in loops carries twists back to the drum. Fix: pull it out straight, let it relax for a minute, and wind again.
  3. 3
Uneven windingHose piled on one side of the drum hits the frame and binds. Fix: guide the hose side to side with your free hand as you crank.
  4. 4
Hose is too long for the reelAn overfilled drum rubs the frame on every turn. Fix: check the rated capacity against your hose length — see our sizing guide.
  5. 5
Dry or dirty axleGrit and dried-out pivot points make the crank stiff. Fix: wipe the axle and crank pivots clean and add a few drops of light machine oil.
  6. 6
Hose caught on somethingA wheel, the frame, or a garden edge can trap the hose mid-wind. Fix: walk the line and free it before you force the crank.
  7. 7
Frozen water insideIn cold weather, ice in the hose or swivel locks everything up. Fix: bring it somewhere warm to thaw. Never force a frozen reel — that is how fittings crack.

Quick Diagnosis: Symptom → Fix

What you notice Likely cause Fix
Crank is stiff from the first turn Water pressure in the hose Shut spigot, open nozzle, drain
Gets harder as the drum fills Overfilled reel or uneven wind Re-wind evenly; check capacity
Hose kinks as it winds Twists in the hose Pull straight, let it relax, re-wind
Squeaks or grinds Dry or dirty axle Clean and oil pivot points
Won't turn at all in cold weather Ice in the hose or swivel Thaw indoors; don't force it

When It Is the Reel

If the hose is drained, straight, and the right length and the crank still binds, look at the hardware. A bent crank arm, a loose bolt letting the drum shift, or a cracked plastic hub will all cause binding that no amount of oil fixes.

Steel carts are built to be serviced. Bolts can be snugged, pivots can be oiled, and wear parts can be replaced. If you own a Real Hose Storage cart, check our replacement parts before you replace anything.

FAQ: Hard-to-Crank Hose Reels

Why is my hose reel so hard to wind?

Usually the hose is still pressurized or full of water. Shut the spigot, open the nozzle to drain it, and wind again. If it is still hard, check for twists, uneven winding, or an overfilled drum.

Should I lubricate my hose reel?

Yes. A few drops of light machine oil on the axle and crank pivots once or twice a season keeps the crank smooth. Wipe off grit first so you are not oiling dirt into the joint.

Can I wind a hose with the water on?

You can, but it is harder on you and on the reel. A pressurized hose is stiff and bulky, so it takes more effort to wind and takes up more room on the drum.

Why does my hose kink when I reel it in?

Twists. A hose that was dragged in loops carries twists back to the drum. Pull it out straight, let it relax, then wind it slowly with light, even tension.

The Bottom Line

Drain the hose, straighten it, and wind it evenly — that solves most hard-cranking reels. If it still binds, oil the pivots and check the capacity. Only then blame the hardware.
